The Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner is a great option in the under $300 price range. It scans photos up to 8.5×11.7″ – it can handle negative scanning – but keep it mind, scanning is slow.
The Epson FastFoto FF-680W is the speediest scanner I’ve ever used. While I enjoy the speed, I find I need to be very attentive to the possibility of dust getting trapped on photos and I don’t care for the quality when scanning darker images. This scanner does not scan negatives or slides, only photos up to 8×10″. This is a great option for scanning lots of photos quickly as long as you are attentive to the quality. I would not use this scanner for older, fragile photographs.
This Epson Expression 12000XL is in a league of its own! It offers photo scanning up to 12×17″ in addition to scanning negatives and slides. This is the scanner you want to invest it if you were a scrapbooker looking to digitize your 12×12″ pages. It’s definitely out of the budget for most consumers. So, you may be interested in outsourcing your large scanning needs to me.
However you decide to get your photos digitized, I encourage you not to wait until you get it together some day. Photographs don’t get stronger with age. They get discolored. They are susceptible to environmental damage.
